A Conservative mining seat - can it be true? In fact the reasons for the strong Tory showing in North Yorkshire's Selby are not hard to find. The Selby coalfield is the most recent, most modern and possibly the last of its kind in Britain. But the advent of mining does not affect the political balance - many miners commute from other constituencies. There is a substantial Labour presence in the towns - (Selby itself, Tadcaster and Sherburn-in-Elmet), but a Tory majority of 9,000 seems like a pretty safe start for new candidate Kenneth Hind.
