Attercliffe, on the east of the great South Yorkshire city of Sheffield, was once the home of its mighty and world-renowned steel industry. But now the blast furnaces are silent following a long-term recession in the industry - and yet Attercliffe has bounced back. Newer industries have created prosperity, most of the semi-detached houses are owner-occupied, and there is an absence of traditional 'inner-city' problems. If this seat were in Essex, its skilled manual workers - C2s - would long since have gone over to the Tories, but this is South Yorkshire, regional Labour loyalties run deep, and their MP Clive Betts will find the Conservatives a long way behind him.
