Sheffield has been the most loyal of England's great cities to Labour since 1918. Brightside, to the north-east, where over half the housing is council-owned, and unemployment is twice the national average, is the most fanatically loyal seat in this red city. Labour's David Blunkett took over 70 per cent of the vote in 1992, a feat repeated in only eight other seats in the UK. There is no reason why he should not repeat - or even surpass - it in 1997.
