Wartime bombing and slum clearance programmes have radically transformed the face of Sheffield's city centre. It is now dominated by soaring tower blocks, some commercial, most council flats. This is an ultra-safe, literally inner-city, Labour seat, with one of the highest unemployment rates in England and poor housing. It is not wholly grim, however - Sheffield is a city of great charm, and this is reflected in its proud centre. The gain of one safe Labour ward in boundary changes only serves to reinforce MP Dick Caborn's unassailable position.
