This is a largely rural seat centred on Shropshire's county town Shrewsbury, famous for its public school and agricultural show. Much of it - the rural areas and the wealthier neighbourhoods of Shrewsbury - is natural Conservative territory. Although the two opposition parties can muster between them more votes than the Tory winner in 1992, Derek Conway, only a combination of large-scale tactical voting and Tory collapse could threaten his position.
