Across the River Mersey from the City of Liverpool, Birkenhead retains a solid Labour tradition, although its social profile is not as solidly down-scale as some of the seats across the river. There are leafy residential streets of Victorian mansions and middle-class suburbs, as well much poor terraced housing and blocks of council flats. The individualistic MP, Frank Field, who is much respected by MPs outside his own party, probably enjoys a large personal vote and will hold on to this seat comfortably.
