At the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, Skipton and Ripon is a seat that depends on two industries - tourism and farming. It is an amalgamation of the major parts of the two older constituencies of Skipton and Ripon. Both of these once had a strong Liberal tradition - Skipton was a Lib/Tory marginal and Ripon was actually taken by the Liberals in 1973 - but the combined seat, after its creation in 1983, let them down badly, and their chances now appear to be long gone. Conservative MP David Curry seems solidly seated.
