The Liberal Democrats dominate Somerset County Council, but as yet hold only one of the five seats in the western county at parliamentary level. They will be hoping to improve that situation at the next General Election, particularly if the Conservatives go down to their first national defeat since October 1974.

One of their better chances in Somerset is the eastern division of Somerton and Frome, a constituency of small towns and agricultural villages. In 1992, David Heath, a bearded optician from Frome, came within 4,341 votes of the Tory MP Mark Robinson. In 1997 he will hope to finish the job he has already started.
