A working-class seat at the mouth of the Tyne, South Shields has in its time been a shipbuilding metropolis, an active coal-mining community and a holiday resort on the North Sea. Newer industries have arrived, but still leave the area with an unemployment rate 60 per cent higher than the national average. South Shields also has 50 per cent more council housing than average and an ethnic community of Bangladeshis and Yemenis. In such circumstances, it would be surprising if this were not a safe Labour seat, and so it is, with MP David Clark sitting on a comfortable five-figure majority.
