There are no large towns in Staffordshire South. However, most voters come not from an agricultural background, but from the newish suburban communities on the western edge of the West Midlands conurbation. Rural or not, this is good Tory territory - 80 per cent of the housing is owner-occupied, and only 1 per cent of the population is of Afro-Caribbean or Asian origin. Sir Patrick Cormack, a Staffordshire MP since 1970, looks set to maintain the Tories' long hold on this area.
