The northern part of Staffordshire's great industrial centre is, like almost all of the rest of the city, solidly Labour working-class territory. It has never been marginal, and Labour has almost always enjoyed a substantial five-figure majority since the war - 15,000 in 1992. But now the Boundary Commission has transferred 19,000 of the Labour voters of Kidsgrove out to rural Staffordshire, and moved 5,500 mainly Tory electors in, which may take Labour's lead down to four figures. Yet this is great news for Labour. MP Joan Walley will retain Stoke North easily, but, with the arrival of Kidsgrove, the neighbouring seat of Staffordshire Moorlands should now return a Labour MP.
