In Scotland, seats that have a majority of middle-class residents, which would in England be safely Tory, are perfectly capable of electing Labour MPs. A good example would be Strathkelvin and Bearsden, which are northern suburbs of Glasgow. The Strathkelvin section is fairly mixed, consisting of the largely owner-occupied Bishopbriggs and Kirkintilloch, which does have some council estates. But Bearsden is one of the most high-class (in socio-economic terms) towns in the whole of Britain, with over 80 per cent of non-manual workers and streets of large gritstone mansions.
That Bearsden should be part of a seat which has now twice elected Labour's Sam Galbraith indicates Scotland's resentment of an English- based and -elected government and the general skew to the left north of the border. If yet another Conservative government were to be elected without Scottish support, the claims of nationalism would be much further advanced.
