Most of Suffolk South is archetypal Tory rural England. Much of the constituency is redolent of a costume-drama film set, and indeed is often has been. There are Labour-voting nuclei in some of the small towns, but the only real contest here is for second place. The Lib Dems took the silver medal last time, but Labour may catch them in 1997. Sitting Tory MP Tim Yeo knows, however, that there are no real prizes for coming second in a general election race.
