The North Eastern city of Sunderland, on the river Wear, is one of the most depressed industrial areas in Britain. The 1991 census recorded male unemployment at around 20 per cent, and youth unemployment is far worse. Two collapsed industries - the now-extinct Durham coalfield and shipbuilding - were once the basis of the local economy and newer industries have proved no compensation. All of which makes Sunderland a Labour stronghold - there are still Tory-voting areas in Sunderland North, but they are dwarfed by extensive tracts of solidly working-class residential development. Will Bill Etherington retain his five-figure majority? Yes. In fact, the only real question is - as happened in 1992 - will Sunderland North be the first seat to declare its result?
