The boundaries of Birmingham's Hodge Hill are quite close to those of the former Stechford constituency which was held by former Labour grandee, SDP founder and EEC Commissioner, Roy Jenkins. Hodge Hill remains essentially Labour. A fair balance of owner occupation and council housing belies normally expected voting habits. Many of the owner-occupiers are non-white, Asian voters and inclined to Labour, while the council estates' electors are relatively skilled and comfortable with many 'swing' voters who switched to the Conservatives during the 1980s - the very voters Labour is trying to woo back this time, which should see a marked increase in Labour's majority.
