Not a real island, Thanet, at the eastern tip of Kent, is noted for its run-down seaside resorts like Margate, traditionally a playground for daytrippers from London. This, the northern of the two Thanet seats, is even more blue than the southern, with 37 per cent of voters pensioners. Except for a few dissenting Labour wards in Margate, Tory Roger Gale is in a one-horse race.
