The only Conservative constituency in Tyne and Wear is Tynemouth, in North Tyneside. It has only ever been won by Labour in their great year of 1945. But it will be surprising if they do not take it in 1997, after a gap of over 50 years.
In 1992, they pared Neville Trotter's Tory majority to just 597. The seat includes heavy industry on the north bank of the Tyne in places like North Shields, as well as the Conservative coastland around Cullercoats and Whitley Bay. In the boundary changes some of the working-class Labour area is removed, specifically the Riverside ward, which includes part of the notoriously troubled Meadow Well estate. Nevertheless, the Tories will have to withstand a swing to Labour of only just over 3 per cent if they wish to hold on to their last seat in the urban North East of England.
