This is really the old Wallsend seat, with the significant removal of Wallsend - the eastern terminus of Hadrian's Wall - itself. That changes little electorally in this landscape of former mining villages and large council developments and, although there are some middle-class voters in commuter villages in the area, this is a very solid Labour seat, which will re-elect MP Stephen Byers with a comfortable majority.
