Upminster is the easternmost edge of Havering borough, itself the easternmost borough in Greater London - London Underground's District line ends here. In most ways it is more Essex than it is London. The seat is 97.5 per cent white - the highest proportion in Greater London - and is a mixture of the most upmarket and downmarket parts of Havering. Though Upminster was seen as a marginal when it was created in the 1970s, like many Essex seats this has swung strongly to the right since the 1970s. Large swings are possible in this area, but realistically, Labour has little hope of ousting Sir Nicholas Bonsor from this seat.
