Capital of Yorkshire's old West Riding, Wakefield is a historic market town and the focus of a heavy industrial belt and a former major coalfield. This sounds like ideal Labour territory and, indeed, the seat has been held by Labour since 1932. Although Labour nearly lost the seat in 1983, that was an exceptionally bad year for the party, and they should have no problems this time, although boundary changes slightly reduce the party's majority.
