With its high proportion of council estates, Walsall North should be a safe West Midlands Labour seat. Appearances, however can be deceptive. Although Labour has consistently held the seat, it has sometimes been by a slim margin - just over 1,000 votes in 1987 - and it has been classified as a marginal for over a decade. Local difficulties have contributed to this poor showing, including a by-election caused by the fraud conviction of Labour MP and ex-cabinet minister John Stonehouse in 1976. Labour should hold the seat this time - but it is worth bearing in mind that a local 4 per cent swing against them would dislodge sitting MP David Winnick.
