Northumberland's Wansbeck is based on the former Morpeth seat that existed before 1983, and which was won comfortably by Labour in every general election since the second world war. The town of Morpeth itself is not good Labour territory, housing many affluent Newcastle commuters. The Labour vote, however, is assured by the inclusion of the mining towns of Ashington and Bedlington and industrial Newbiggin. Even in Labour's disastrous year of 1983, the party retained a lead of nearly 8,000 votes. Labour's new candidate, (party stalwart Jack Thompson announced his forthcoming retirement in 1995) will be a shoo-in.
