Labour's centrist splinter party, the SDP, launched its first parliamentary election campaign in Merseyside's Warrington North in July 1981. Roy Jenkins gave Labour a tough fight in this by-election, losing by only 1,759 votes. Warrington North is the successor to that contested seat, and it has never seen another such close contest. Although recent boundary changes do not favour Labour, they can still count on a comfortable five-figure majority. Sitting MP Doug Hoyle has long since wiped the sweat of 1981 from his brow.
