Labour captured Warrington South with a majority of 191 in 1992, but this is one of those peculiar seats which, after boundary changes, have nominally reverted to the Conservatives (see Ilford South and Croydon North).

Here on the south bank of the Mersey and the Manchester Ship canal some territory has been removed to the new Weaver Vale constituency, in particular some of the Runcorn New Town suburbs. Warrington South is therefore more based now on the affluent Cheshire areas around Lymm, Grappenhall and Stockton Heath.

Given the likely national swing to them, Labour have a very good chance of 'gaining' Warrington South for the second election in a row. However, the MP who did this last time, Mike Hall, has decided to take the nomination for the safe seat of Weaver Vale instead.
