At first sight, Warwick and Leamington looks like an archetypal Tory safe seat. It voted in Sir Anthony Eden for 34 years, and Labour has never won the seat. But, in 1983, the solidly Conservative town of Kenilworth was removed in boundary changes, lopping at least 6,000 votes from the Tory majority. So, for the first time, Labour could be within sight of victory - operating out of their substantial power bases in the eponymous towns, they cut Sir Dudley Smith's majority to 9,000 in 1992. An admittedly large swing of 8 per cent would give them the constituency - who knows?
