The depopulation of the East End London boroughs of Newham and Tower Hamlets has led to the loss of one of their seats in the recent boundary changes. Newham South has been abolished and three wards have gone to the old Newham North East constituency, now called West Ham. With over 40 per cent of the population Asian and Afro-Caribbean, Newham is one of the most heavily non-white boroughs in London, which helps to make it the most solidly Labour of all London boroughs. Rebellious and acerbic Labour MP Tony Banks can expect to mete out a hammering to the Tories in West Ham.
