Westmorland is an old English county that was absorbed into Cumbria in the local government changes of 1974. It used to constitute a seat in its own right, but had Lonsdale from Lancashire and a bit of Yorkshire added to it in 1983. The changes did nothing to affect Westmorland's rural, Tory-voting nature - this is one of the most agricultural constituencies in a highly urbanised nation, the other main industry being tourism attracted by the beauties of the Lake District. The Lib Dems have put up a good show in local elections here, but in a general election, they will finish a poor second behind the Conservatives' farmer MP Michael Jopling.
