The Liberal Democrats have been stealing up on the Conservatives in Weston-super-Mare for several elections now. In 1992 they reduced Sir Jerry Wiggin's majority to 5,342, and although at that time technically part of the county of Avon (now abolished), from a Tory point of view Weston was showing alarming signs of succumbing to the 'Somerset disease' of active Liberalism.

Sir Jerry is retiring at the next election, and his successor Margaret Daly must hope that the rot is stopped in the 1997 election.
