Wiltshire North is the successor to the former Chippenham constituency, which saw some very close challenges to the Conservatives from the Liberal Party way back in the 1960s. Today the Liberal Democrats still do well in local elections in the several small market towns that make up the seat, but this no longer translates into a vote that looks threatening at general elections. The Lib Dems may hope to challenge the Tories more closely in 1997, but the Conservatives ought to hold.
