Unlike its North East neighbour, Wolverhampton South East has remained a safe Labour seat since its creation in 1974. South East has been hit by industrial decline - it has an unemployment rate twice the national average. Again unlike North East, about a quarter of the population is non-white. With the collapse of the local Lib Dem vote in 1992, Labour's majority leapt from 6,000 to 10,000, and their MP Dennis Turner will not be expecting any great surprises in 1997.
