The Lancashire textile town of Blackburn was long associated with Labour Party doyenne Barbara Castle and is now represented by arch Labour reformer Jack Straw. This is a very mixed seat with comfortable suburbs and poor inner-city areas with a substantial Asian electorate. Like many northern textile towns, there is a significant Conservative vote here, but not enough to unseat Labour, even in Labour's 1983 electoral disaster.
