Just beyond the north-east periphery of Greater London and at the end of London Underground's Central Line, Brentwood and Ongar contains well-off towns and villages that make for a safe Conservative seat. The Liberal Democrats do well in Brentwood itself in local government elections, and were well ahead of Labour in second place at the last election, but there is no reason to expect them to achieve the dramatic further improvement that would challenge the Conservatives' grip.
