Brighton Pavilion is one seat which Labour has never won but where they may well be favourites to break their duck next time. This western division of the Sussex coastal town centres on traditionally the more elegant end of the seafront, towards genteel Hove. However Brighton has been trending left in local borough council elections for over a decade, and Labour easily took control of the new unitary authority which covers both Brighton and Hove.
The other, eastern, seat in Brighton (Kemptown) was held by Labour a couple of times in the 1960s, but boundary changes have now made it the less favourable half of the town for them. The Solicitor General, Sir Derek Spencer, will count himself very lucky indeed to hold Pavilion at the general election.
