Constituencies centred around the eastern side of Bristol have for a long time been marginal 'swing' seats. There have been changes, but the new Bristol East constituency should continue this tradition. With a good cross section of electors, but best typified by skilled manual owner-occupiers, Bristol East will remain a seat to watch for a good indication of what is happening nationally. Held by Labour at the last election, a Conservative gain would be a sure sign that something had gone very wrong with Labour's game plan for victory.
