For 14 years, the MP for the Isle of Ely, in the heart of East Anglia's fens (now renamed Cambridgeshire North East) was Liberal Democrat Clement Freud - chef, gourmet and radio and TV personality and one of the best-known personalities in the Commons. As often happens with the Lib Dems, Freud gained the seat in a by-election, and proceeded to make it a personal fiefdom. It was a shock then, when Tory Malcolm Moss succeeded in unseating him by 1,500 votes in 1987. In 1992, this seat reverted to its pre-Freudian safe Tory status, with a Conservative majority of 15,000 - the Lib Dems can harbour little hope of regaining the constituency.
