Cardiff West was won by the Conservatives in Labour's disaster year of 1983, but this must be seen as an aberration and against the natural order of political expectations. There are some Tory areas on the outer suburban fringes, and in some more select city centre neighbourhoods, but the constituency also contains some extensive council estates, which have seen more than their fair share of social problems. The balance is clearly in Labour's favour, and the party can expect to hold.
