Tony Benn is one of our best known Parliamentarians. Former aristocrat and principled left-wing scourge of all things Tory, he represents the north Derbyshire seat of Chesterfield. Chesterfield is an industrial town in its own right, but the constituency also contains attractive small communities which are within commuting distance of Sheffield. Tony Benn will hope to be safe here, but the Liberal Democrats have a strong local government base in Chesterfield and picked up over a third of the vote at the last general election. The 6 per cent swing from Labour to the Liberal Democrats that would be needed to unseat Tony Benn looks highly unlikely, but as in so many other parts of the country, such tantalising prospects help to maintain Liberal Democrat morale.
