Congleton contains a number of solid and worthy small towns in this part of south east Cheshire, as well as several essentially commuter villages whose electors look north-east towards Manchester. The seat is held by Conservative MP Ann Winterton, whose husband Nicholas represents nearby Macclesfield. Labour is not strong in this part of Cheshire, but the Liberal Democrats do very well indeed in local elections. They have not yet been able to translate this into a serious challenge to the Conservative in Westminster elections, and merely come a respectable second. The most likely scenario will be for this pattern to continue, but hope springs eternal for the Liberal Democrats.
