The constituency of Cumbernauld and Kilsyth in Central Scotland is not typical of the older and traditionally industrial towns that proliferate here, being centred on the New Town of Cumbernauld. Also, council house sales have changed the pattern of housing tenure in the town in favour of owner-occupiers, although these are skilled working households rather than middle-class in their complexion. None of this has affected the traditional affinity of the local population to Labour, and the party held the seat with over 50 per cent of the vote in 1992. The SNP advanced to second place, but do not at present seem to pose a serious threat.
