The New Town of Irvine is the main community in the Ayrshire seat of Cunninghame South, which, together with other small and more traditional working class towns, is yet another fairly safe Scottish seat for Labour. It is also another seat that saw a significant advance by the SNP to second place, but insufficient to be a close challenger to Labour in 1997.
