The Cynon Valley is one of those former South Wales coalmining valleys whose close knit and very traditional communities vote solidly for Labour. Aberdare and the other smaller towns along the valley returned Labour's Ann Clwyd to parliament in 1992 with a handsome majority, and the same is likely to happen in 1997.
