The Conservatives actually won this former mining constituency in West Nottinghamshire in an exceptional 1977 by-election. However, this essentially remains safe Labour territory. The demographic profile may have been slowly drifting away from Labour as the area moves away from its former mining roots, but not sufficiently to challenge Labour's hold when normal circumstances prevail.
