Labour's Margaret Beckett only just held on to her Derby South seat during the high point of the Conservative electoral success in the mid-1980s. The south of Derby includes the city's traditional railway and aerospace industries. Stretching from poor inner-city terraces, through estates of local authority housing to the owner-occupied suburbs, the constituency presents a cross-section of this industrial city. The balance, at present, favours Labour, and Beckett should expect to return safely to Westminster.
