The small towns of Melksham, Devizes, Marlborough and Calne, together with many comfortable villages in this part of rural Wiltshire, contribute to a fairly typically safe, Conservative, 'shire' constituency. Unlike nearby Chippenham, in nearby Wiltshire North, there is no established Liberal Democrat tradition in Devizes, and the Conservatives have no worries here.
