This seat stretches from Okehampton on the edge of Dartmoor through the rolling acres of central Devon up to Bideford and the Atlantic coast at Hartland Point, Clovelly and Westward Ho!

It would have been a prime target for the Liberal Democrats in any case, in their western heartland and including places that were in two seats they have previously won, Torrington and North Devon. The Conservatives held on by only 3,614 last time.

But when the Tory MP, Emma Nicholson, announced that she was defecting to the Liberal Democrats herself, in all probability the last nail was in the Conservative coffin here.

Emma Nicholson is not standing again, here or anywhere else. The Liberal Democrats have a very viable candidate in John Burnett, from Okehampton.
