The West Midlands industrial town of Dudley was formerly split into East and West constituencies and on the former division, Dudley East favoured Labour, while the West favoured the Conservatives. Dudley is now divided into North and South and the new boundaries produce two very balanced seats. Dudley North contains a cross-section of residential areas, including some very comfortable and Conservative-voting areas. However, at best, this new seat should be viewed as being notionally highly marginal, and in the current circumstances Labour will hope to capture the new constituency in 1997.
