The relatively large constituency of Dumbarton, on the north shore of the Firth of Clyde and to the west of Central Scotland's industrial heartland, is held by Labour, but not with the seemingly unassailable majorities found to the east. As well as the town of Dumbarton, the seat contains the comfortable waterside town of Helensburgh, the solidly Labour voting working-class towns of the Vale of Leven, and a fair chunk of sparsely populated moorland. In 1997 the seat should remain safe for Labour.
