The Dunfermline East constituency of shadow Chancellor Gordon Brown, just over the Forth Bridge from Edinburgh, is centred on the former coalmining communities of Fife and also includes the oil terminal at Dalgety Bay and the naval dockyard at Rosyth. This is a very safe Labour seat. Unusually for Central Scotland, the Conservative candidate held on to second place in 1992, just ahead of the SNP, but streets behind Brown.
