Eastwood is notable for being probably the safest Conservative seat in Scotland. Affluent owner-occupiers compose the bulk of the electorate in this suburban Glasgow seat with the only strongly Labour area found in the small industrial town of Barrhead. In 1992, Tory MP Allan Stewart was returned with less than 50 per cent of the poll, but significant votes for both the Liberal Democrats and the SNP reined back the Labour candidate's challenge to a poor second place.
