Edinburgh South contains some of Edinburgh's most genteel suburbs, with a preponderance of professional and managerial voters, as well as some sprawling peripheral council estates. Labour won this little changed seat from the Conservatives in 1987 and retained control in 1992. They should expect to hold the constituency in 1997, although any Conservative revival in Scotland could herald a Tory victory here.
